Great acting by all, especially Ernest Borgnine as the Viking King Ragnar, father of Einar, his heir (Kirk Douglas) and of Eric (Tony Curtis) whom he got on the English Queen Enid of Northumbria when he raped her during the raid that opens the story. Now the two sons, unaware of their kinship, fight over a captured Welsh princess (Janet Leigh). Wonderful unspoilt and authentic scenery - it was shot in Norway - and superb music based on the haunting sound of the great horn echoing across the fjord add to the primitive atmosphere, the sheer brutality of these people. I wasn't quite convinced about Janet Leigh as Morgana - she shouldn't have been blonde, they were used to blondes, no blonde would have had that effect on Einar - but Maxine Audley was just right as Enid and I loved Eileen Way's Odin-witch Kitala. If you like historical adventure that has you glued to your seat (I could not go and get that drink!) you must see this film. It surely is one of the best of its kind ever made.
